When you call to make an appointment for the procedure the receptionist will inquire as to how many weeks
pregnant you think you might be. To work this out, you should calculate this from the first day of your last period. Some women
can get confused, thinking that the pregnancy is measured from the time of conception, so it is always most reliable to go on
when your last period was. For example, if the first day of your last period was 6 weeks ago and you conceived mid cycle, that
is four weeks ago, then you will be 6 weeks pregnant, not 4. If your last period was different from normal, if you have very
irregular periods or you are not sure when your last period was then, don’t panic as our doctor can perform an ultrasound to
accurately predict how pregnant you are. This is done to help determine how pregnant you are as the operation is most safely
performed between 6 – 12 weeks of pregnancy. You will not need to view this ultrasound. Blood tests used to measure how pregnant
you are can be inaccurate in the case of extreme uncertainty. We are able to assist you with pregnancy termination from 6 – 12
weeks of pregnancy.
When you arrive for your operation you will meet with our doctor. She will discuss your decision with you. The operation will be discussed
with you and a pregnancy ultrasound will be performed to confirm how pregnant you are.
The complications will be discussed with you and
you will be given the chance to ask questions. If you remain confident in your decision and decide to proceed with the operation then you
will be escorted into the change area where you will have a private area to wait. The anaesthetist will meet with you and will discuss
the anaesthetic with you. (See later section, 'The Anaesthetic'.)
After the operation you will wake in recovery. You will be looked after by a nurse and will rest for approximately 2 hours before going
home. The nurse will discuss with you all you need to know before leaving and will give you written information called "The Aftercare
Information Sheet."
